Essential Duties

Oversees faculty of the Department of Education in their operation of the Elementary Education BS and the MEd (with concentrations in Educational Leadership, Gifted Studies, and Reading and Literacy), and collaborates with chairs and faculty from other departments in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education in the operation of the MAT program. Responsible for departmental budgeting, course scheduling, review and reporting of EPP assessments, records management, personnel matters (including faculty/staff hiring and evaluation), and serves as chief liaison with CAEP and other accreditation entities, K-12 partner schools/districts, and with the Mississippi Department of Education. Teaches undergraduate and/or graduate courses in discipline. Represents the department in campus shared governance and reports to the Dean of the College of AS&E. Oversees the director of the Mississippi Governor’s School and other summer education programs, and works with the Office of Outreach and Innovation to develop and deliver continuing education opportunities to educators.

Minimum Qualifications

Required: earned doctorate in Education or closely related area (specialty area open) from a regionally accredited university; K-12 teaching/administration experience; experience in leadership in higher education that emphasizes collaboration and shared governance; evidence of strong organization, communication, and leadership skills; experience with program planning; ability to articulate a vision for innovative teacher preparation programs. Preferred: experience with learning outcomes assessment and academic program assessment; experience with accreditation processes and familiarity with accreditation trends; close involvement in programs for college student recruitment and retention; experience with online course delivery.

Job Description Summary

The chair shall provide effective leadership for long-term planning in the department, focused on academic program strength and growth. The chair shall also provide day-to-day management of the department, both in its internal affairs and in its interactions with other units on campus and external constituencies.
